How to Hang Wall Art in a Rental (No Nails, No Damage, No Stress)

One of the most common questions we hear from renters is: "Can I put art on my walls without losing my bond?" The short answer is yes — if you choose the right hanging method for your wall surface, print weight, and frame type.

This guide covers damage-free options suitable for typical Australian rental properties, from lightweight unframed prints to heavier framed sets.

Know Your Wall Surface First

The single most important thing to consider is what your wall is made of. Most Australian rental properties have one of these three surfaces:

  • Plasterboard / Gyprock — the most common interior wall in modern builds. Smooth, slightly hollow-sounding when tapped. Most adhesive products are rated for this surface.
  • Painted brick or masonry — common in older homes and apartments. Porous surface; adhesive performance varies by paint condition and texture.
  • Tiles — typically in bathrooms and kitchens. Non-porous and smooth; adhesive strips generally perform well if the surface is clean and dry.

If you're unsure, tap the wall — a hollow sound indicates plasterboard; a solid thud suggests masonry.

Damage-Free Hanging Methods

Adhesive Strips (e.g. Command Strips or similar)

Removable adhesive strips are the most widely available damage-free option in Australia. You can find them at Bunnings, Officeworks, and most hardware stores. They work by creating a strong bond that releases cleanly when pulled at a specific angle.

  • Follow the manufacturer's weight rating carefully — overloading is the most common cause of failure.
  • Always apply to a clean, dry surface. Dust or grease will reduce adhesion significantly.
  • Allow the full curing time (usually around an hour) before hanging anything.
  • Each strip pair has a stated weight limit; add extra strips for heavier prints.

Adhesive Hooks

Single or double adhesive hooks suit unframed prints mounted on lightweight backing board, canvas, or clip frames. Check the hook's weight rating and confirm it suits your wall surface type before opting for this hanging method.

Leaning and Shelving

For larger framed prints or grouped sets, leaning art against the wall on a picture ledge or floating shelf is a completely nail-free option that also makes rearranging easy. It also looks fantastic when you add accessories and other styling pieces. Picture ledges can often be mounted with adhesive-rated products at lower weights, or may be already installed in some rentals.

Gallery Wire Systems

Some rental properties have pre-installed picture rails (common in heritage and older Australian homes). If yours does, a gallery wire and hook system lets you hang multiple prints without touching the walls at all.

Choosing the Right Method

You can use this table as a guide on how to hang your chosen artwork. Always check the weight rating on your chosen method before hanging.

Wall Surface Print / Set Weight Frame Format Recommended Method Notes
Plasterboard / Gyprock Under 500 g Unframed (paper, foam board) Adhesive strips or adhesive hooks Most reliable surface for adhesive products
Plasterboard / Gyprock 500 g – 2 kg Light frame (clip frame, thin timber) Multiple adhesive strip pairs Use rated pairs at each corner; allow full cure time
Plasterboard / Gyprock 2 kg – 4 kg Medium frame (timber, boxed) Picture ledge / leaning, or pre-installed picture rail Adhesive strips may reach limit; leaning is safer
Painted brick / masonry Under 500 g Unframed Adhesive strips (masonry-rated) or leaning Clean paint surface required; test adhesion first
Painted brick / masonry 500 g – 2 kg Light to medium frame Picture ledge / leaning Adhesive unreliable on textured or flaking paint
Painted brick / masonry Over 2 kg Any frame Leaning against wall or pre-installed rail Do not rely on adhesive at this weight on masonry
Tiles (bathroom / kitchen) Under 500 g Unframed or clip frame Adhesive strips or hooks (tile-rated) Surface must be clean and completely dry
Any surface Any weight Any frame Pre-installed picture rail + gallery wire Zero wall contact; ideal if rails are already present

Weighing Your Print Set

If you're hanging a multi-print set, add up the total weight of all pieces — including frames — before selecting your method. Kitchen scales work well for smaller prints. For larger framed pieces, use bathroom scales for an  estimate.

As a general guide:

  • Unframed art prints (A3–A1, paper) typically weigh 50–200 g per print.
  • Clip frames (A3–A1) typically weigh 200–600 g each.
  • Timber frames (A3–A1) typically weigh 400 g–1.5 kg each depending on moulding depth.

A set of three unframed A2 prints will usually fall comfortably within the range for adhesive strips. A set of three timber-framed A1 prints will likely suit a picture ledge or leaning arrangement instead.

Before You Leave the Property

When it's time to move, follow the removal instructions on your adhesive product carefully. Most recommend pulling the tab slowly at a low angle parallel to the wall — not pulling outward. Removing strips correctly is what keeps the wall surface intact.

If any mark or residue remains, a small amount of isopropyl alcohol on a cloth will typically remove adhesive residue from plasterboard and tiles without affecting the paint, but always test in an inconspicuous spot first.
